One of the most romantic stories about Paris is the tale of Abelard and Heloise. Abelard was a philosopher and theologian in the 12th century, while Heloise was his student and later became his lover. Despite their love for each other, their relationship was forbidden, and they were forced to separate.

Abelard was castrated by Heloise’s uncle, who disapproved of their relationship, and became a monk. Heloise became a nun and devoted herself to prayer and study. Despite being separated physically, their love for each other never waned, and they continued to correspond through letters.

Their letters are some of the most passionate and eloquent love letters ever written, and they reveal the depth of their love and their longing for each other. In one letter, Abelard wrote to Heloise, “You alone were the cause of my passion, and you alone will be the cause of my cure.”

Years later, when Abelard died, Heloise arranged for his body to be brought to the Paraclete, the abbey where she lived. She was buried next to him, and they were reunited in death.
